Barbirolli, John (Giovanni Battista) 1899 - 1970. English conductor. He was noted for his interpretation of Vaughan Williams and Sibelius symphonies. Trained as a cellist, he succeeded Toscanini as conductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra 1937-43 and was conductor of the Halle Orchestra, Manchester, England, 1943-70. Knighted 1949.
